> Each year industrial mobile equipment such as fork lifts, skid steer loaders and haul trucks are involved in thousands of workplace accidents
> In fact, according to 2007 statistics from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of
Canada and the U.S. Bureau of Labor, mobile equipment was the source of over 275 deaths and
20,000 lost time injuries across Canada and the United States
> Using data from Work Safe BC and the US National Safety Council, we estimate the annual impact of these accidents to exceed $US 750 million. These figures represent worker costs only and do not include damages to property and equipment

> Using advanced radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies, PSST has developed
a patent pending collision avoidance system that can be tailored to a wide range of mobile equipment and workplace environments

> The system uses RFID technology to quickly and accurately measure the proximity of people, objects and vehicles within the workplace. These real-time proximity measurements are then used to trigger warnings to workers and vehicle operators when a safety zone has been breached. A typical installation  would include the use of both a warning zone and danger zone with distinctive signals.
> The system is derived from four components that can be configured to meet a wide range of workplace safety requirements.

WORKER TAG All workers are outfitted with a tag concealed in a high visibility hard hat,  vest  or harness.
The tag broadcasts a signal to the vehicles in the workplace, and provides 360 degree protection for the worker. The Hard hat warns the worker of the presence of a vehicle within the safety zone with an audible tone and/or vibration. In many situations, this warning alone is sufficient to mitigate the threat as the worker can take the necessary steps to get out of the way.

OBJECT TAG Object tags are similar to the worker tag except that they are designed to
be installed on inanimate objects that require protection from mobile equipment. They can also be used to prevent vehicles from entering or exiting certain areas of the facility. For example, object tags can be installed around the perimeter of a loading dock to prevent fork lifts from falling off the dock.
VEHICLE MODULE  The vehicle module installed on the mobile vehicle detects the presence of worker and object tags and determines their proximity. Both directional and
360 degree coverage can be configured depending on the type of equipment. For example, a fork lift operating in a distribution center would be best served with front and rear directional antennas, while a large 360 degree protection zone would be more appropriate for a haul truck working in a mining operation. The driver of the vehicle is notified of the presence of a worker or object within the safety zone by flashing LEDs
in the cab. The system can also be integrated with the vehicle to provide throttle and/or braking control. A log of all system activity can be captured and be used to investigate accidents or near miss incidents.
GATEWAY A gateway  can be positioned  at the entrance  to a facility  to ensure the operation  of worker  tags before they enter the work area. Colored LEDs indicate  the status of the system.
